The V/Line regional train network forms the public transit backbone between Geelong and Melbourne. The dedicated Geelong rail corridor pushes high-frequency commuter services across the urban spine, stopping at local suburbs including Waurn Ponds, Marshall, South Geelong, Geelong, North Geelong, North Shore, Corio, and Lara, before running express into Melbourne's Southern Cross station. Avalon Airport, located roughly halfway between Geelong and Melbourne, functions as the region's dedicated passenger and freight aviation hub. It primarily hosts domestic budget carriers like Jetstar, offering an alternative to Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport. Additionally, the waterfront infrastructure supports major maritime transport. In 2022, the Spirit of Tasmania relocated its mainland ferry terminal to Corio Quay. This facility now hosts daily roll-on, roll-off passenger and vehicle services directly across the Bass Strait to Devonport, Tasmania, cementing the city as an interstate transport gateway.
Local Bus Services
Within the municipal limits, public transportation relies exclusively on a comprehensive bus network managed by Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and operated by private providers such as McHarry's Buslines and CDC Geelong. These local routes intersect primarily at the Geelong Railway Station and the Moorabool Street interchange, running radial services outward to the Bellarine Peninsula, the coastal towns, and the sprawling western greenfield housing estates.
