Geelong represents a major success story for government decentralisation. Further reinforcing the white-collar civic workforce, the state government bases the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and WorkSafe Victoria in the central business district. These institutions provide dense, high-income bureaucratic employment that supports the broader professional services and retail economies.

Deakin University acts as an economic pillar in its own right. With a sprawling main campus at Waurn Ponds and supplementary facilities on the waterfront, the university supports thousands of direct jobs and underpins a large international and domestic student economy. Commercially, the region serves as the operational nerve centre for major national retail brands. The Cotton On Group, one of Australia's largest fashion and lifestyle retailers, operates its global headquarters out of the nearby suburb of North Geelong, employing thousands locally across design, logistics, and supply chain management.
Industrial and Maritime Activity
Despite the end of passenger vehicle manufacturing, specifically the closure of the long-running Ford plant, industrial output remains a critical local factor. The Port of Geelong operates as the sixth-largest port in Australia and a massive driver of regional trade. The port handles bulk freight, fuel, timber, and agricultural exports arriving from the fertile plains of western Victoria. Nearby industrial precincts in Corio and North Shore continue to host oil refining, timber processing, and advanced manufacturing ventures, preserving the city's blue-collar industrial heritage in a modernised context.
