Townsville functions as the central transport and logistics node for North Queensland, connecting the coastal population centres with the resource-rich interior and the islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Road Networks
The road system is anchored by the Bruce Highway, which passes directly through the city's western and southern suburbs. This highway is the primary artery linking Townsville to Brisbane in the south and Cairns in the north. Running west from the city is the Flinders Highway, a vital freight corridor that connects the coastal port to the mining and agricultural communities of the North West Minerals Province, stretching nearly 800 kilometres inland to Mount Isa.
Aviation Infrastructure
Townsville Airport operates under a joint-user agreement, sharing its primary runways with RAAF Base Townsville. The civil terminal manages domestic passenger flights connecting the city to major eastern seaboard capitals like Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, as well as regional centres. The airport is also a critical base for emergency services, housing the Royal Flying Doctor Service and dedicated search-and-rescue helicopters that cover the vast northern region.
Maritime and Rail Links
Cleveland Bay serves as the maritime heart of the city. SeaLink operates high-frequency passenger ferries that cross the bay to Magnetic Island, serving daily commuters and tourists alike. For heavy freight, the Mount Isa railway line terminates at the Port of Townsville, delivering millions of tonnes of minerals and processed metals directly to the export wharves. The North Coast railway line also passes through the city, carrying the Spirit of Queensland passenger service and coastal freight trains.
