The region houses a number of globally and nationally recognized recreational institutions. The most prominent is Australia Zoo, located inland in Beerwah. Founded and operated by the Irwin family, the facility is both an enormous regional employer and the area's most internationally recognized cultural export. Further north in Yandina, the Ginger Factory represents a legacy agricultural attraction, while Aussie World provides a sprawling domestic amusement park anchoring the southern highway corridor.
Markets and the Arts
Community markets form an essential element of weekend culture and the local artisan economy. The hinterland town of Eumundi hosts the Original Eumundi Markets twice a week; this massive operation is entirely locally managed and requires stallholders to adhere strictly to a "make it, bake it, sew it, grow it" philosophy, drawing thousands of attendees. At the elite level, the area is represented nationally by the Sunshine Coast Lightning, a highly successful professional netball franchise born out of the University of the Sunshine Coast. The region's geography also makes it a dominant destination for endurance sports, permanently hosting major events such as the Mooloolaba Triathlon and large-scale ironman competitions.
