The Road Network
The Stuart Highway is the critical transport artery for Alice Springs, bisecting the town and connecting it to Darwin (approximately 1,500 kilometres north) and Adelaide (approximately 1,500 kilometres south). This fully sealed highway is essential for freight, with road trains bringing in the vast majority of the town's food, fuel, and consumer goods. Other major unsealed or partially sealed roads, such as the Tanami Track and the Plenty Highway, connect the town to remote mining and pastoral regions.
Rail Connections
Alice Springs is a major stop on the Adelaide-to-Darwin railway line. While the line is famous for hosting The Ghan—a luxury transcontinental passenger train operated by Journey Beyond—its primary economic function is freight. The rail terminal in Alice Springs handles large volumes of bulk goods and containerized freight, which are then distributed regionally by road.
Aviation Infrastructure
Alice Springs Airport (ASP) is a vital link to the rest of the country. It handles regular commercial flights to major capitals like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Darwin. Beyond commercial passenger services, the airport is a critical base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, charter flights serving remote communities and mining operations, and the storage of commercial aircraft due to the region's dry, low-humidity environment.
