Traeger Park is the premier sporting ground, functioning as the spiritual home of the Central Australian Football League (CAFL). The facility boasts a high-quality turf surface and periodically hosts official Australian Football League (AFL) matches, bringing top-tier competition to the red centre. The local CAFL competition is split into town teams and country teams, with players frequently travelling hundreds of kilometres to play weekly fixtures.
Motorsport and the Finke
Off-road motorsport defines the town’s winter calendar, driven by the internationally renowned Finke Desert Race. Held annually on the King’s Birthday long weekend, the race is a grueling multi-terrain sprint for dirt bikes, cars, and buggies travelling from Alice Springs to the small community of Aputula (Finke) and back. It is one of the most difficult off-road courses in the world, heavily supported by local volunteers and dominating the town's mechanical and automotive economy in the months leading up to the event.

The town has a unique pedigree in hosting large-scale adult athletic events, famously originating the Alice Springs Masters Games. Often billed as the "Friendly Games," this biennial multi-sport event transforms the town into an Olympic-style village for mature-age competitors from across Australia and overseas. The Games harness almost all outback infrastructure—utilising local courts, pitches, shooting ranges, and golf courses—and serve as a massive driver of internal sports tourism for the territory.
