Local Government and Administration
At the municipal level, the city is administered by the City of Newcastle council. State Jurisdiction
The New South Wales State Government maintains authority over major structural services operating within Newcastle. This includes public transport networks, major roads, policing, public education, and health services including the massive John Hunter Hospital campus.
Politically, the state electoral districts covering the city, such as the districts of Newcastle and Wallsend, send members to the New South Wales Parliament in Sydney. The region has historically possessed a deeply entrenched alignment with the Labor Party, an alliance heavily rooted in the city's unionized, industrial, and mining past.
